Drivers on 12 Mile Road between Novi Road and Farmington Road face lane restrictions after the Road Commission for Oakland County began a $12 million, two-year rebuild of the corridor on July 13.
The project, a partnership between RCOC and the cities of Farmington Hills and Novi, is the latest addition to what has become a summer of orange barrels across Farmington Hills. As we reported July 25, three other RCOC projects were already squeezing traffic on nearby corridors.
Phase 1 covers two segments: Drake Road to Farmington Road, where work started July 13, and Novi Road to Haggerty Road, where crews are expected to begin Monday, August 3. One lane will remain open in each direction throughout construction, and access to homes and businesses will be maintained.
The stretch carries 28,000 to 30,000 vehicles daily, according to RCOC. The 5.5-mile scope includes milling and repaving with asphalt, concrete patching west of M-5, ADA-compliant crosswalks with pedestrian push-button signals, SMART bus stop upgrades, a new High-Intensity Activated Crosswalk (HAWK) pedestrian beacon at White Plains Drive, and curb and gutter repairs.
Cadillac Asphalt of Farmington Hills is the contractor.
RCOC expects Phase 1 to wrap by mid-November. Phase 2, covering Haggerty Road to Drake Road, will begin in spring 2027.
The city announced approximately $30 million in road and infrastructure improvements for 2026 overall, funded through federal grants, the 2018 and 2024 road millages, and the city's water fund.
"Continually investing in the City's infrastructure is essential to maintaining safe, reliable roads and utilities for community members, businesses and visitors," Jacob Rushlow, Farmington Hills' director of public services, said in the city's April construction-season announcement.
