Farmington and Farmington Hills seniors 62 and older can visit the Detroit Zoo for free on Wednesday, Sept. 9.

The Tri-County Senior Day runs from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the zoo, located at 8450 W. 10 Mile Road in Royal Oak. Both cities sit in Oakland County, making their residents eligible alongside seniors from Macomb and Wayne counties. Each senior may bring one adult guest at no charge.

No ticket or reservation is required. Attendees need only a valid ID.

Oakland County promoted the event on its official X account, describing live entertainment, animal exhibits, bingo and a resource area focused on local senior programming and services.

The Detroit Zoo's event page lists additional free activities: carousel rides, informational tram tours, cookies and lemonade, and animal engagements led by zoo care staff. The zoo's newly opened Fred and Barbara Erb Discovery Trails will also be open to visitors during the event.

Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan, which presents Senior Day, will offer flu shots on-site alongside Alana's Foundation. Alana's Foundation will subsidize the cost for attendees without insurance. Those who want to preregister for the flu clinic can use Clinic ID 3146 and passcode ALANAS2026.

The 125-acre zoo campus offers ADA-accessible pathways, with wheelchair and ECV rentals and sensory bags available for visitors who need them. A few attractions carry separate fees: the 4D Theater, Stingray Cove, concession stands and the Wild Explorer VR Experience.

Oakland County also promoted the event on its Facebook page, calling on "all tri-county older adults" to attend.

Sept. 9 is the second of two Senior Days the zoo held in 2026; the first took place May 27.
