Farmington Public Schools’ board is scheduled to consider a resolution Tuesday, Oct. 20, concerning state school safety and mental health funding.

The Board of Education's 6 p.m. regular meeting agenda at Maxfield Education Center includes a second reading of the Section 31aa Opt-In Resolution, listed under action items. The Oct. 6 agenda listed the resolution for a first reading.

What the funding resolution means

Section 31aa provides separate funding for student mental health and student safety in 2026-27. According to Thrun Law’s explanation of the revised requirements, schools accepting safety funds must cooperate with an investigation after a qualifying mass-casualty event and waive certain privileges held by the district. Those conditions do not apply to the separate mental health funding.

The posted agenda text does not specify Farmington’s allocation or reproduce the resolution’s terms.

Schools of Choice and enrollment pressure

The board will also discuss Schools of Choice updates for the 2026-27 school year and recommendations for 2027-28. Schools of Choice provisions in state law allow districts to enroll students from outside their boundaries and count them toward membership, which directly affects per-pupil funding.

The discussion comes as Farmington faces enrollment headwinds. An Oakland County Times analysis published in March found Farmington among six Oakland County districts that lost more than 1,000 students between 2014-15 and 2024-25.

The analysis reported a statewide K-12 public school enrollment decline of more than 123,000 students, or 8.2%, over that period.

Audit and other updates

The agenda includes a district audit update but does not describe its scope or identify the presenter.

The board will also hear updates on nutrition services and dual enrollment. Regular meetings are streamed on the district’s YouTube channel, linked from its meeting page.
