The Farmington Civic Theater is rolling out two new events in August built around the same hook: you won't know what you're watching until the lights go down.
First up is Mystery Movie Monday on Monday, August 10. For $5, moviegoers can catch an R-rated new release at 7:20 p.m. before anyone else. The theater is billing it as a sneak peek with a twist. The runtime is about one hour and 45 minutes, and the title stays secret until the projector starts.
No exceptions.
Three days later, the theater debuts Secret Cinematheque, a monthly series launching Thursday, August 13, at 7 p.m. Detroit News film critic Adam Graham will host the first installment, presenting a PG-13 mystery film and leading a post-screening discussion. Graham has been at The Detroit News since 2002 and was named the paper's film critic in 2016. He is a founding member of the Detroit Film Critics Society.
The series is set for the second Thursday of each month. Before each screening, the theater plans to drop clues on social media and in its newsletter. Audience members who correctly guess the film will be entered into a drawing for a free poster and movie tickets.
Both events take place at the Farmington Civic Theater, 33332 Grand River Ave. in downtown Farmington. Tickets for Mystery Movie Monday are available at thefct.com. Ticket pricing for Secret Cinematheque was not listed on the theater's website as of early August.
The next Secret Cinematheque after the August debut has not been formally scheduled, though the second-Thursday cadence points to September 10.
