The Farmington Community Library's Farmington Hills branch at 32737 W. 12 Mile Rd. will switch to limited evening hours starting Monday, Sept. 21, as construction crews begin removing concrete beams from the main lobby.

The reduced schedule runs through Thursday, Oct. 8, according to the library's website. Four sections will be closed to the public during that stretch: the Children's Department, Teen Area, Fiction Browsing Room and Friends Sale Room. Collections in those areas won't be available for browsing, though patrons can still request materials through the online catalog and pick them up once a hold notification arrives. Holds may take longer than usual to process and may not be available for same-day pickup.

Temporary hours are: Monday through Thursday, 4–9 p.m.; Saturday, 10 a.m.–6 p.m.; and Sunday, 1–5 p.m. The branch will be closed Fridays. All daytime programming during the beam-removal period has been canceled.

Staff will be reachable by phone during daytime hours when the building is closed. The Farmington branch at 23500 Liberty St. will keep its normal schedule throughout.

The renovation timeline was outlined in the library director's report at the Sept. 10 board meeting, according to draft meeting minutes. Trustees voted 8-0 at that meeting to award a $48,955 contract to Library Design Associates for moving shelving in the Children's area during construction. West parking lot resurfacing at the Farmington Hills branch is also set to begin Sept. 21.

The library placed a full-page ad in the Farmington Press to alert the public, according to the Sept. 10 board meeting minutes. Patrons can also sign up for email building alerts at farmlib.org.

Book and media donations are paused during construction due to lack of storage, the Friends of the Library reported at the Sept. 10 board meeting. The Friends are planning a pop-up book sale tentatively set for Oct. 24–25.

Bestselling author TJ Klune will visit the Farmington Hills auditorium on Monday, Oct. 19, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. for a talk and book signing. The in-person event is full, but virtual registration through Zoom remains open. The free event, sponsored by the Farmington Friends of the Library, does not require a library card.

The next library board meeting is scheduled for Thursday, Oct. 8, at 6 p.m.
