A Farmington Hills doctor who founded his own primary care practice and trains the next generation of physicians is now leading Michigan's largest family medicine association.
Dr. Brandon Karmo, a family physician at Henry Ford Medical Group Orchard Primary Care on West 10 Mile Road, became the 78th president of the Michigan Academy of Family Physicians in July 2026, The Oakland Press reported July 20. He will serve a one-year term.
The academy represents more than 4,100 family medicine physicians, residents and medical students across the state, according to MAFP's website. It is a state chapter of the American Academy of Family Physicians.
Karmo joined the MAFP board of directors in 2017, just one year after finishing his residency. He moved through the ranks as treasurer, secretary and vice president before reaching the presidency. In his MAFP board profile, written when he joined the board in 2017, Karmo wrote that the profession "has already given so much to me" and that he wanted to advance family medicine for his generation.
Deep roots in Farmington Hills
Karmo founded Orchard Primary Care in 2020 alongside Dr. Madeleine McMall. The practice, at 30852 West 10 Mile Road, now operates as part of Henry Ford Medical Group and serves patients of all ages with a focus on both treatment and prevention.
His connection to the area runs deep. During a final-year medical school rotation, Karmo first experienced family medicine at Ascension Providence Hospital in Southfield, the same hospital where he and his children were born. He matched there for residency and later served as chief resident.
Karmo earned a biology degree with University Honors from Wayne State University and his medical degree from the Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine. He holds board certifications from both the American Board of Family Medicine and the American Osteopathic Board of Family Medicine.
Teaching and recognition
Beyond his clinical work, Karmo serves as clerkship director for the Michigan State University College of Human Medicine, overseeing family medicine training for third- and fourth-year students. He is also a clinical assistant professor at MSU, where he has been named Faculty of the Year and Outstanding Faculty Mentor of Family Medicine each year since 2022.
He teaches residents as faculty for the Ascension Providence Family Medicine Residency and serves as secretary of the Family Medicine department at Henry Ford Providence.
Hour Detroit magazine has named Karmo a top doctor every year from 2022 to 2026. Castle Connolly has listed him as a Top Doctor since 2024.
Outside medicine, Karmo is active with the Chaldean American Association of Healthcare Professionals, participating in health fairs and community outreach programs, according to his MAFP profile.
