The roundabout at Orchard Lake Road and 14 Mile Road in Farmington Hills recorded 118 crashes and nine injuries in 2025, making it the fourth most dangerous intersection in Michigan.
The ranking comes from Michigan Auto Law's annual analysis of data from the Michigan State Police Traffic Crash Reporting Unit, reported Wednesday, Sept. 16, by FOX 2 Detroit. The firm counts crashes within 200 feet of an intersection controlled by traffic signals, four-way stop signs or roundabouts, including those near freeways and their on-ramps, off-ramps and service roads, as well as divided highways and rural roads.
Crashes at the Farmington Hills roundabout rose 8.2% from 109 in 2024, according to the Detroit Free Press. Injuries nearly doubled, climbing from five to nine over the same period.
It has ranked before. Historical totals show 132 crashes in 2023, 122 in 2021, 89 in 2020, 178 in 2019 and 144 in 2018, according to the Free Press. The 2022 figure was not included in the report.
Four of the top six most dangerous intersections statewide in 2025 were roundabouts. The No. 1 spot went to 18½ Mile Road at Van Dyke Avenue in Sterling Heights, a roundabout with 210 crashes and 12 injuries. Only two of the top 20 intersections fell outside southeastern Michigan, both in Grand Rapids, according to Patch.
Steve Gursten, president and attorney at Michigan Auto Law, said he hopes the annual list encourages drivers to take extra precautions. "Even when a crash doesn't result in an injury, it can have a significant impact on a driver and their family," Gursten said in a statement reported by the Free Press.
The Michigan Auto Law report cited running red lights, disregarding stop and yield signs, failing to yield the right-of-way, improper left turns, speeding, distracted driving and impaired driving as leading causes of intersection crashes statewide. Nearly one-third of all car crashes in Michigan and about 30% of fatal crashes occur at intersections, according to the report.
Farmington Hills' most recent Capital Improvements Plan lists a completed project at the Orchard Lake Road roundabout south of 14 Mile Road: installation of landscaping, fencing and a foundation for future signage. No safety-engineering improvements at the roundabout appear in the city's current capital plan.
No response from Farmington Hills officials regarding planned safety improvements at the roundabout was available as of Wednesday, Sept. 16.
