Heights Brewing, the gluten-free brewery and taproom at 23621 Farmington Road, will shut down permanently on Saturday, Aug. 2, ending a two-and-a-half-year run in downtown Farmington.

Owners Ryan Kavanagh and Shawn MacDonnell-Kavanagh announced the closure Wednesday, July 22, in a Facebook statement, citing rising cost of goods, loan payments, and unforeseen challenges that made continued operations unsustainable.

"One of the greatest joys of owning Heights Brewing was watching someone's face light up when they realized they could order anything on the menu — no questions, no worry, no fine print," the owners wrote. "Seeing families, friends and first-time guests finally feel safe dining out meant the world to us."

The husband-and-wife team, both Farmington residents and longtime homebrewers, held their grand opening on Feb. 10, 2024. They built out the 3,500-square-foot space in the former Page's Food & Spirits building, installing a redesigned facade, garage-style doors, accordion windows, and outdoor seating. Birmingham-based DesignTeam Plus handled the design.

What set Heights apart was its entirely gluten-free kitchen and a dual grain-mill system that kept standard and gluten-free brewing separate, with exhaust systems to remove airborne particulates. The taproom featured 24 taps offering rotating beers, wine, hard cider, mead, hard seltzer, hop water, and root beer, all produced on-site, according to pre-opening coverage in Hometown Life.

MacDonnell-Kavanagh joined the Farmington Downtown Development Authority board in January 2024, just weeks before the brewery opened. She described the city at the time as having "the marketability of a small town with big things happening."

Heights isn't alone in closing. Cadillac Straits Brewing Company in Madison Heights is also winding down after seven years, citing similar market pressures and pandemic-era timing, Patch reported Wednesday.

Heights Brewing remains open through its final day, Saturday, Aug. 2.
