Michigan schools conducted 89% more formal threat and suicide assessments in 2025 than the year before, driven by tips to the state's OK2Say student safety program, according to a Michigan State Police annual report released Tuesday, July 21.
The program received 10,777 confidential tips covering about 8,242 incidents last year. That's the second-highest annual total since OK2Say launched in September 2014, trailing only 2024's record of 11,671 tips.
A total of 445 schools statewide conducted formal behavioral threat or suicide assessments after receiving an OK2Say tip in 2025, MSP reported. The near-doubling of those assessments suggests schools are acting on tips more systematically than in prior years.
What students reported
The top category was labeled "other," which includes anxiety, stress, depression and harassment, with 1,816 tips. Suicide threats followed at 1,767. Bullying drew 1,576 tips, drugs accounted for 1,153, and sexual assault, misconduct or exploitation generated 1,036.
Immediate outcomes
Fifty-seven tips led to the immediate hospitalization of a student experiencing suicidal thoughts or actions. Forty-one tips involved a weapon. Another 220 resulted in the seizure of drugs or alcohol.
MSP Director Col. James F. Grady II said in a statement that the program "empowers students to take an active role in keeping their schools and communities safe."
How the program works
Anyone can submit a tip to OK2Say around the clock. Specially trained technicians receive each submission and route it to the appropriate local agency for follow-up. Tips without enough identifying detail may not be forwarded to local agencies, MSP said.
The program is available to all Michigan students, including those in Farmington Public Schools, which maintains a dedicated OK2Say resource page on its district website.
