Farmington and Farmington Hills residents can ride any SMART bus or on-demand service for free on Tuesday, Aug. 4, when polls open for the Michigan state primary.

The regional transit authority announced Thursday, July 30, that it will waive all fares from midnight to 11:59 p.m. on Election Day, according to The Oakland Press. No fare, pass, or ticket required.

The offer covers the full SMART network across Macomb, Oakland, and Wayne counties, including the SMART Flex on-demand zone that serves Farmington and Farmington Hills. Riders in that zone book trips through an app and get picked up at their location rather than waiting at a fixed bus stop.

Fixed-route buses, Connector curb-to-curb service, and ADA Paratransit rides are also free all day.

"On Election Day, that mission means making sure a lack of transportation never stands between a resident and their polling place," SMART General Manager and CEO Tiffany J. Gunter said in the announcement. "Free rides, all day, across our entire network, for everyone."

Riders who use Connector or ADA Paratransit still need to reserve trips in advance, as they normally would.

SMART also has a direct stake in the Aug. 4 vote. The agency is on the ballot in Wayne County, though that measure does not affect Farmington or Farmington Hills, which sit in Oakland County.

The Aug. 4 primary includes local, state, and congressional races across the Farmington area.
