State Sen. Jeremy Moss will be on the ballot this November as the Democratic nominee for Michigan's 11th Congressional District, the seat that represents Farmington Hills and much of Oakland County.
The Associated Press called the race for Moss at 9:31 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 4, with unofficial results showing him at 49.2% of the vote with 67% counted. Aisha Farooqi finished second at 33%, followed by John Paul Torres at 9.6% and Don Ufford at 8.2%, Michigan Advance reported.
Moss now faces Troy Mayor Ethan Baker, who ran unopposed in the Republican primary, in a November general election. Both Cook Political Report and Inside Elections rate the district as solidly Democratic. Rep. Haley Stevens, who vacated the seat to run for U.S. Senate, won reelection in 2024 by nearly 19 points, according to the Detroit Free Press.
The 11th District spans Troy, Royal Oak, Farmington Hills, Pontiac, Auburn Hills, Birmingham, Ferndale and West Bloomfield. The primary was among the key races on Farmington-area ballots Aug. 4.
"Thank you Oakland County! It's the honor of a lifetime to be your democratic nominee," Moss wrote on X after the results came in.
Who is Jeremy Moss?
Moss has served in Lansing since 2015, spending two terms in the Michigan House before winning his Senate seat in 2019. He currently serves as Senate President Pro Tempore and chairs the Elections and Ethics Committee. Before entering state politics, he sat on Southfield's city council starting in 2011.
On the campaign trail, Moss focused on gun safety, expanding reproductive freedom, tax relief for seniors and lowering healthcare costs. He pointed to his legislative work on gun safety reforms passed after the 2023 Michigan State University shooting and an expansion of Michigan's Civil Rights Law, according to Michigan Advance's pre-primary profile.
Moss is the first openly gay member of the Michigan Senate and its only Jewish state senator. If elected in November, he would become Michigan's first openly LGBTQ+ member of Congress.
His campaign had raised $1.49 million as of July 15, with $352,516 cash on hand. He was backed by Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson, former Gov. Jim Blanchard and Attorney General Dana Nessel, according to the Detroit News.
Who is Ethan Baker?
Baker has been Troy's mayor since 2019 and was reelected in 2023. He first won a Troy City Council seat in 2015. Outside city government, he is an attorney specializing in estate planning, business law and real estate. Earlier in his career, Baker served as a special assistant to President Ronald Reagan and First Lady Nancy Reagan after they left the White House in 1989.
Baker's campaign announcement cited cost of living, jobs, infrastructure and mental health as priorities, according to CBS News Detroit. His campaign had raised $141,876 as of July 15, with about $121,000 cash on hand.
What's next
The general election is in November. No debate or public forum between Moss and Baker has been announced. With a nearly 10-to-1 fundraising advantage and a district Stevens carried by 19 points two years ago, Moss enters the general election as the heavy favorite.
