Detroit Lions mascot Roary and radio personality Shannon from 95.5 will greet families at the Farmington Hills Citywide Open House on Oct. 3.
The free event runs from noon to 3 p.m. on the City Hall campus at 31555 W. Eleven Mile Road, rain or shine. Shannon will arrive with the radio station's branded truck to hand out free ice cream while supplies last, according to a city announcement. Free hot dogs and other treats will also be served.
The annual open house gives residents a behind-the-scenes look at city departments. This year's lineup spans five departments with hands-on activities for all ages.
Kids and adults can climb Department of Public Works trucks and heavy equipment. The fire department will run live demonstrations, and visitors can walk through police headquarters and meet K-9 officers. Special Services will host crafts and games, and the Communications and Community Engagement team will help attendees record a video on site.
Acting City Manager Karen Mondora, who stepped into the role after the city council accepted City Manager Gary Mekjian's resignation, according to a city statement, called the event a highlight on the city's calendar.
"The Citywide Open House is one of our favorite annual traditions, bringing together residents of all ages to explore, learn, and have fun," Mondora said in the announcement.
Mondora has worked for Farmington Hills for 14 years, rising through roles as a civil engineer and director of public services before becoming assistant city manager, according to her state biography.
Free parking and shuttle service will be available from Oakland Community College's (OCC) Orchard Ridge Campus at 27055 Orchard Lake Road. Residents can call the City Manager's Office at 248-871-2500 for more information.
