New York Times bestselling author Josh Malerman will appear at the Farmington Civic Theater on Friday, Oct. 16, for a screening of "Other Mommy" followed by a live Q&A.

The horror film, adapted from Malerman's 2024 novel "Incidents Around the House," opens in theaters Friday, Oct. 9. Academy Award winner Jessica Chastain stars in dual roles as a young girl's mother and as "Other Mommy," a sinister entity that takes on the mother's appearance. The film is rated R and runs 93 minutes.

Attendees can arrive early for a pre-movie book signing with Malerman, according to the theater's event listing. The Farmington Civic Theater's now-playing page also lists "Other Mommy" as a regular screening starting Oct. 9, so residents can see the film before the special event.

Malerman, an author with Michigan ties who lived in Ferndale during the 2010s, is also one of two singer-songwriters for the rock band The High Strung. His debut novel "Bird Box" became a Netflix film in 2018 starring Sandra Bullock.

He drew on that musical background when describing the adaptation in an August interview with The Hollywood Reporter: "To me, Incidents is a few notes on the piano, and the movie is a great electric version of it."

Malerman also served as executive producer on the film, which is directed by Rob Savage and written by Nathan Elston, a writer for the Emmy-winning series "Succession." James Wan produced.

@joshmalerman: "Come one come all, let's talk movies books scripts life loves and lore."

Malerman wrote on Threads that the Oct. 16 Q&A caps a two-day stretch at the Farmington Civic Theater. He said the Michigan premiere of his documentary "To All the Books" is scheduled for Thursday, Oct. 15, at the same venue.

The Farmington Civic Theater is at 33332 Grand River Ave. in Farmington. Showtimes and ticket information are available at thefct.com or by calling (248) 474-1951.
