The Farmington Civic Theater is screening "The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas" over Labor Day weekend. The 1982 Dolly Parton comedy continues a tribute to the singer and actor, who died Aug. 25 at age 80.

Showtimes are 7:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 4, through Sunday, Sept. 6, with a 7:15 p.m. showing Monday, Sept. 7, according to the theater's website. The screening follows a Sept. 3 showing of "Steel Magnolias," another Parton film, at the Grand River Avenue theater.

The film stars Parton alongside Burt Reynolds and Dom DeLuise. It was Parton's second major film role after "9 to 5" and earned Golden Globe nominations for Best Motion Picture in a Comedy or Musical and Best Actress in a Motion Picture Comedy or Musical, according to Parton's official website. The film is rated R and runs one hour and 54 minutes.

The screenings come at a critical time for the downtown Farmington theater, which has struggled with attendance since the pandemic. Pre-COVID crowds averaged 60,000 to 70,000 a year. The theater needs 50,000 to break even but projects only about 26,000 for 2026, Chris Weber, the city's assistant city manager, told C&G News in an Aug. 23 article about the theater's finances.

The Farmington City Council approved a $154,000 loan extension for the theater in June, with repayment due by June 30, 2027.

Theater manager Clare Cooney has been expanding programming with classic film nights, independent movies and special events. In the same August interview, Cooney described the single-screen theater as "a step back in time" where moviegoers get "that Dolby sound big screen experience in a quaint, charming old theater."
