The Farmington Community Library's Farmington Hills branch is closed until further notice. The shutdown at 32737 W. 12 Mile Rd. marks an escalation from the limited-hours schedule that had been in place since Sept. 21.
The library announced the full closure on its website, citing safety concerns for the public and staff during ongoing construction. The branch had been operating on reduced hours through Thursday, Oct. 8 while crews removed concrete beams from the main lobby. Several areas, including the Children's Department, Teen Area, Fiction Browsing Room and Friends Sale Room, were already shut down.
The branch is closed to the public until further notice.
The library says it does not know when the branch will reopen. The closure is part of a Phase One renovation expected to wrap up in June 2027. The project includes new small-group study rooms, expanding the count from five to nine, according to branch director Sasha Matthews. It also adds a children's services information desk, an outdoor reading garden, renovated restrooms for Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) compliance and a repaved front parking lot. All Phase One work is funded through the library's general operating budget.
Sarah Zitter, the library's community relations director, told C&G Newspapers on Sept. 18 that the library board had been planning and saving for the renovations for years. "Small group study rooms are among our most utilized services," Zitter said. "I've been with the library for five years, and … I can't think of a day when we haven't had a full wait list for a study room."
