Farmington Hills will host a free wellness fair offering flu and COVID-19 vaccinations and health screenings on Tuesday, Oct. 6. The city's Special Services Department hosts the event at the Costick Center, 28600 Eleven Mile Road, between Middlebelt and Inkster.
The fair runs 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The city has partnered with Kroger Health to offer flu, COVID-19, pneumonia, RSV and other vaccinations for all ages, according to a city press release. Health screenings, educational resources, vendor demonstrations and door prizes round out the morning. Adults 60 and older get a free lunch.
Attendees should bring a photo ID with a current address and an insurance card or Medicare/Medicaid card. Ciena Healthcare is sponsoring the event. For details, call 248-473-1830.
Two days later, former NASA astronaut Dr. Jeanette Epps headlines the National Council of Jewish Women, Michigan's (NCJW|MI) Women of Vision fundraising luncheon on Thursday, Oct. 8, at Adat Shalom Synagogue, 29901 Middlebelt Road.
Epps spent 235 days in space, including 232 days aboard the International Space Station, as a mission specialist on SpaceX Crew-8, The Jewish News reported. She is also a former CIA intelligence officer who retired from NASA after nearly 16 years of service. A Syracuse, New York, native, she holds a doctorate in aerospace engineering from the University of Maryland.
Epps said part of her talk will focus on resilience. "Women are resilient because we are always willing to do what it takes to be called resilient. Resilience is earned!" she told Michigan Mama News on Sept. 24.
The luncheon will also honor longtime community volunteer Carolyn Tisdale with the Woman of Vision award. Tisdale chairs the board of MAZON, a nonprofit fighting hunger in the United States and Israel, and co-chairs the Bookstock Fund. The Jewish Hospice and Chaplaincy Network will receive the Josephine S. Weiner Community Service Award.
Registration runs 9:30 to 11:45 a.m., with boutiques open 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. The speaker and awards presentation begins at 11:45 a.m. Tickets start at $54, with student tickets at $18.
