Farmington-area veterans and military families can connect with health care, career help and benefits counselors at a free Oakland County Veterans Resource Fair on Friday, Aug. 28, from 9 a.m. to noon at the Executive Office Building, 2100 Pontiac Lake Road in Waterford Township.

For the first time this year, attendees must register for a timed entry slot before arriving. Oakland County announced the fair on X, and organizers said the timed slots will reduce wait times and crowding so every veteran gets face time with representatives.

Sign-ups are available through Eventbrite.

The fair is open to veterans, active duty service members, National Guard and Reserve personnel, and their families.

What's available

Representatives from more than a dozen organizations will be on-site, according to Oakland County's veterans resource page. Services include:

  • Detroit VA Healthcare System registration and health exams for non-enrolled veterans
  • Benefits information and claims assistance from Oakland County Veterans' Services
  • Meijer gift cards for Oakland County veteran residents who bring a copy of their DD214
  • Career planning and job-search help through Oakland County Michigan Works!
  • Behavioral health screening from Oakland Community Health Network
  • Free gun locks from VA Suicide Prevention
  • On-site DD214 printing by the Michigan Veterans Affairs Agency
  • Free nonperishable food boxes and free dental appointments

Nearly 50,000 veterans live in Oakland County.

The fair site is roughly 10 miles from Farmington Hills.

Local access point

Veterans who cannot make the Waterford event have a closer option. Oakland County Veterans' Services holds monthly outreach appointments at CARES of Farmington Hills, 27840 Independence St., on the second Thursday of each month. Benefits counselors there help veterans navigate disability compensation, VA healthcare, education benefits, home loans and transportation to VA medical centers in Detroit and Ann Arbor, all at no cost.

Questions about the Aug. 28 fair can be directed to Tyrone Jordan at Oakland County Veterans' Services, 248-858-0785 or [email protected].
