North Farmington draws a ranked opponent Friday when No. 25 South Lyon travels to Farmington Hills for a 7 p.m. kickoff at 32900 W. 13 Mile Road.
Both teams enter the Sept. 25 game at 3-1. The matchup landed on the MaxPreps Top 25 Scoreboard for Week 5, one of the state's highlighted games.
The Raiders will lean on senior Elijah Cobb, who ranks among Michigan's top dual-threat quarterbacks through four games. Cobb sits 24th statewide in passing yards with 589 and 21st in rushing yards with 414, per the MaxPreps statistical leaderboard.
North Farmington opened the season Aug. 28 with a 14-13 comeback win over Birmingham Groves at Wayne State's Tom Adams Stadium, part of the Amazon Prep Kickoff Classic, according to Groves' own athletics site and Detroit Sports Commission. Cobb broke off a 65-yard run to set up the go-ahead score with 5:25 left, and coach Jon Herstein called him "a heck of a ball-player; good leader" who "made a big play" in the clutch moment, per Detroit Sports Commission's recap. The Raiders then beat Lakeland 54-26 on Sept. 3, lost to South Lyon East 34-35 on Sept. 10 and routed Walled Lake Central 72-14 on Sept. 18 to reach 3-1.
South Lyon has won three straight since a Week 1 loss at No. 2 Clarkston, 16-37. The Lions beat Livonia Churchill 49-14 on Sept. 3, Walled Lake Western 35-14 on Sept. 10 and then beat No. 8 Milford, per The Oakland Press's own rankings, 49-18 on the road Sept. 18. South Lyon scored four unanswered touchdowns in the second half of the Milford game, the newspaper reported.
The Lions' ground game piled up more than 300 yards against Milford. Running back Tyler Newton topped 100 total yards and scored twice. Quarterback Carter McGlinch added a rushing touchdown and made the most of his few passing attempts.
After the win, McGlinch told The Oakland Press on Sept. 19 he was already looking ahead. "Now, hopefully (we beat) North Farmington next week. Let's do it," McGlinch said.
South Lyon is 2-0 in Lakes Valley Conference play, tied with South Lyon East atop the LVC standings, per the same report. The Lions' only stumble came against a Clarkston team ranked second in the state, and they have outscored opponents 133-46 in three wins since.
The Sept. 25 game pits Cobb's dual-threat ability against a South Lyon defense that held Milford to 18 points after the Mavericks had been averaging more than 47 per game. North Farmington's next game is Oct. 2 at Milford, per MaxPreps.
