The driver who struck and killed a priest at Corewell Health Farmington Hills Hospital has been released from custody.

"It was not a hit-and-run," Piggott said. "The case has been presented to the Oakland County Prosecutor's Office. As of now, they are not charging, but looking for additional information." Piggott said there was no evidence the driver was intoxicated. No timeline for a charging decision has been announced, and the investigation remained active as of Aug. 31, according to The Oakland Press.

Father Thomas Szura, 75, of Livonia, was hit in a crosswalk on the hospital campus about 12:30 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 26, and died shortly after medics brought him to the emergency department, Piggott told the newspaper. The driver's name has not been released.

Walking to give last rites

ClickOnDetroit reported that Szura was walking out of the parking structure and heading to the hospital to administer last rites to a fellow priest when he was struck. Farmington Hills police have not publicly confirmed that detail.

Szura was ordained Feb. 19, 1978, and joined the Mariannhill Missionary Society, a Catholic religious order. He handled mission appeals, the organization's Leaves Magazine, banking and bill paying for the Mariannhill Missionaries, according to his obituary.

His obituary described him as someone who enjoyed celebrating Mass and preaching, and who was loved and respected by parishioners.

Funeral services

Visitation was held Monday, Aug. 31, at Stanley Turowski Funeral Home, 25509 W. Warren, Dearborn Heights. A funeral Mass is set for 10 a.m. Sept. 1 at St. Sabina Church in Dearborn Heights, with instate beginning at 9:30 a.m.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations to the Mariannhill Mission Society.

The Farmington Hills Police Department asks anyone with information about the crash to call the department.
