Most Oakland County road construction will stop at 3 p.m. Friday, Sept. 4, for the Labor Day weekend, but drivers who use 10 Mile Road near Farmington Hills won't get a break.

The Road Commission for Oakland County announced Monday, Aug. 31, that it will suspend most projects through 6 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 8. RCOC Managing Director Dennis Kolar also prohibited hauling most heavy earth-moving equipment and other large contractor vehicles that require permits on county roads during the holiday.

The 10 Mile Road closure between Middlebelt Road and Inkster Road is one of five projects that will stay shut through the weekend. Crews are replacing a 99-year-old culvert that carries the road over the Rouge River, located just east of Middlebelt between Millcreek Drive and Briar Hill Drive. The $1.38 million project, funded by RCOC and built by Toebe Construction of Wixom, began July 15 and was expected to wrap up in October, according to RCOC's July announcement. No updated completion date has been provided.

That stretch normally carries about 10,500 vehicles a day. The detour routes drivers along Inkster Road to 11 Mile Road to Middlebelt Road, and back to 10 Mile, or vice versa. Residential and business access is maintained on both sides of the closure.

"Labor Day weekend is a busy travel time for many families," Kolar said in the announcement. "Whenever possible, we suspend road construction over the holiday weekend to help reduce traffic delays and improve the flow of travel."

Four other county roads also remain closed through the weekend:

  • Fagan Road from Grange Hall Road to Lahring Road in Holly Township, closed for a deteriorating culvert
  • Nine Mile Road from Griswold Road to Currie Road in Lyon Township, closed for gravel road paving
  • Northbound Pontiac Trail from 9 Mile Road to north of 10 Mile Road in South Lyon and Lyon Township, closed for reconstruction through mid-November
  • Rosell Road from Oakhurst Road to Joel Road in Rose Township, closed for a deteriorating culvert
